VPNStreamer is an independent Australian website about VPNs, online privacy, and streaming. It is written and maintained by one person: me, Peter McBryde, known on this site as the VPN Streamer. I have been running this site since 2015 and writing about this space since 2017, which makes it one of the older Australian VPN resources still online.
Why This Site Exists
I started VPNStreamer because the practical questions Australians actually ask (“how do I watch this show,” “is this VPN worth paying for,” “why is this blocked here”) were being answered by generic overseas sites that did not test from Australia, did not know the Australian ISP blocking regime, and quietly ranked whichever VPN paid the highest commission.
Ten years on, the site has published over 900 guides and reviews covering VPN services, streaming access, torrenting safety, and device troubleshooting. The core of it is still the same: practical answers for Australians, tested from Australia.
How Reviews and Rankings Work
Every VPN ranked on this site is assessed against the same checklist, documented in full on the How We Compare VPNs section of the main comparison page. The short version: speed and server coverage from Australian connections, privacy policy and ownership (including who actually owns each provider, because several share parent companies), audit history, streaming reliability with the services Australians actually use, and value at the price you will actually pay at renewal, not just the headline discount.
Rankings are not for sale. The clearest proof of that on this site is Mullvad: it appears in the top 10 because it deserves to, even though it has no affiliate program and pays this site nothing. Where a provider has a genuinely bad episode in its history (a data incident, an ownership change, a logging controversy), the review says so, in plain terms, next to the “buy” button.
How This Site Makes Money
VPNStreamer is funded by affiliate commissions. When you click a “Get NordVPN”-style button and then subscribe, the VPN provider pays this site a commission at no extra cost to you. The current affiliate partners are listed in the Earnings Disclaimer, and every page carrying affiliate links notes this near the links themselves.
Affiliate relationships determine which providers appear with buttons, not where they rank. The order of the top 10 is set by the comparison criteria above. If a review reads like an ad, it has failed at its job.
A Note on Scope and Honesty
This is a one-person site, not a testing lab. Where I can verify something directly, I do. Where I cannot (for example, independently auditing a provider’s server infrastructure), I say so and rely on the provider’s published third-party audits instead, with the audit named. When a page on this site turns out to be wrong, it gets corrected or rewritten, and the review pages carry an update date so you can see when they were last checked.
