Visual Voicemail (VVM) lets you see a list of your voicemail messages and choose which to play, skip, or delete — instead of dialling in and listening through them one by one. Apple’s iPhone was the first phone to popularise it back in 2007.
How to Set Up Visual Voicemail on iPhone
- Open the Phone app and tap Voicemail in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Set Up Now.
- Create a voicemail password (4-6 digits).
- Choose your greeting — the default, or record a custom one.
If you want transcription (voicemails converted to readable text), go to Settings → Phone → Voicemail and enable it, if your carrier supports it.
Does 5G Make Visual Voicemail Faster?
Not in any way you’d notice. Voicemail messages are small audio files — even on a slow connection they load in a second or two, and 5G doesn’t meaningfully change that experience. If your VVM feels slow, the actual cause is almost always a carrier-side or account issue, not your connection speed. Worth knowing if you’ve seen claims otherwise.
Does My Carrier Support It?
Most major carriers support Visual Voicemail on iPhone, but not all — particularly some prepaid and smaller MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) plans, which sometimes skip it to keep costs down. If you don’t see the option under Phone → Voicemail, check with your carrier directly.
Does Visual Voicemail Cost Extra?
Basic Visual Voicemail (seeing your message list and choosing what to play) is included free with most smartphone plans. Some carriers charge a small extra fee — commonly a couple of dollars per month — specifically for voicemail-to-text transcription. Check your carrier’s own plan details, since this varies.
Visual Voicemail Not Working?
- Confirm you have a cellular data connection — VVM needs data to load your message list, even though it doesn’t use much.
- Check Settings → Phone → Voicemail is properly configured.
- Restart your iPhone — this clears a surprising number of one-off VVM sync issues.
- Contact your carrier if none of the above works — VVM activation is handled on their end, not just your phone’s settings.
