A Firestick that keeps restarting is one of the most common Fire TV complaints, and the cause is almost always one of three things: not enough power, a failing cable, or a software glitch that a reset clears. Work through the fixes below in order. The first two solve the majority of cases, and none of them require any tools or technical skill.
Why Your Firestick Keeps Restarting
The Fire TV Stick is picky about power. It expects a steady 5V/1A supply, and it is often plugged into a TV’s USB port that was designed for a media stick drawing a fraction of that. When voltage dips, the stick reboots. Software updates gone wrong, a corrupted cache, an overheating stick squeezed behind a hot TV panel, and even a faulty HDMI port can cause the same symptom. The light on the stick tells you something too: a white pulsing light means it is in setup mode, an amber blinking light means it is updating (leave it alone for a few minutes), and a red light on the remote points at flat remote batteries, not a stick problem.
1. Fix the Power Supply First
This is the fix that solves it for most people. Stop powering the Firestick from your TV’s USB port. Use the wall adapter that came in the box, plugged into a power point. TV USB ports typically supply 0.5A; the stick wants a full amp, especially during 4K playback when it works hardest. If you are already using the wall adapter, try a different power point, and avoid power boards with lots of other devices on them.
2. Swap the USB Cable and Check the Adapter
Micro-USB cables wear out, and a worn cable drops voltage exactly when the stick needs it most, which produces random restarts that look like software problems. Try a different, good-quality micro-USB cable. While you are at it, check the wall adapter itself: if it is an old or third-party one rated under 1A, replace it with the original Amazon adapter or one with the same rating.
3. Check the HDMI Connection
A marginal HDMI connection can crash the stick’s video output and force a reboot. Unplug the stick, check the HDMI connector for dust or damage, and plug it firmly back in. If you are using an HDMI hub, splitter or switch, remove it and plug the stick directly into the TV. Try a different HDMI port on the TV if one is free. If the stick is wedged tightly behind the TV panel, use the HDMI extender that came in the box: it improves both the Wi-Fi signal and airflow around the stick.
4. Let It Cool Down
Firesticks run hot, and a stick pushed flat against the back of a warm TV can overheat and thermal-restart. If the stick feels hot to the touch, unplug it and let it cool for ten minutes. When you plug it back in, use the HDMI extender to move it away from the TV’s heat, and make sure the area behind the TV is not completely enclosed. Overheating restarts tend to happen during long viewing sessions or 4K streaming, so if your restarts follow that pattern, heat is your suspect.
5. Update the Software
If the stick stays up long enough to navigate, check for updates: Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for Updates. Amazon regularly patches stability bugs, and a stick mid-failed-update can boot loop until the update completes cleanly. If the amber light has been blinking for more than about ten minutes, the update may be stuck; leave the stick powered and connected to the internet and give it time before intervening.
6. Clear Problem Apps and Free Up Space
A full stick or a single misbehaving app can crash the whole device. Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, and clear the cache on apps you use heavily (streaming apps accumulate large caches). If restarts started right after installing a particular app, uninstall it and see whether the problem stops. Check remaining storage under Settings > My Fire TV > About > Storage; if you are down to the last few hundred megabytes, uninstall apps you do not use. 7. Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If nothing above stops the restarts, a factory reset wipes the stick back to out-of-the-box state. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults. If the stick restarts too fast to navigate the menus, hold the Back button and the Right button on the remote together for about ten seconds to trigger the same reset from the remote. You will need to sign back into your Amazon account and reinstall your apps afterward. A reset fixes software loops; it cannot fix a stick with failing hardware, so if restarts continue after a clean reset on a known-good power supply, the stick itself is likely done.
When the Stick Itself Is Dead
Fire TV Sticks do fail, especially older models that have run hot for years. If you have tried a factory reset with the official power adapter and a new cable and it still restarts, contact Amazon support: sticks have been replaced under warranty for exactly this fault. Out of warranty, a replacement stick is usually cheaper than any repair attempt.
