Netflix lets you download shows and movies to watch offline — handy for flights, long commutes, or anywhere your data or signal isn’t reliable. But downloads don’t last forever, and the rules around how long you’ve got, how many you can save, and how often you can re-download the same title all depend on your plan and the individual title’s licensing agreement.

Do Netflix Downloads Expire?
Yes. Once you’ve downloaded a title, you typically have 7 to 30 days to start watching it before it expires — the exact window depends on the title’s individual licensing deal, not something Netflix sets universally. Once you actually press play, a separate, shorter clock starts: many titles give you just 48 hours to finish watching from the moment you first hit play, regardless of how much time was left on the original window.
On the Downloads page in the Netflix app, any title expiring within the next 7 days shows the time remaining next to it, so you’re not caught out without warning.
How Many Titles Can You Download?
This is where the rules changed since Netflix introduced its ad-supported tier, and it’s a distinction a lot of older guides miss:
- Standard and Premium (ad-free) plans: up to 100 active downloads per device, with no monthly cap as long as you stay under that.
- Standard with ads: capped at just 15 downloads per device, per calendar month — a much tighter limit, and one that resets on the first of each month.
Device limits for downloading also follow your plan: Standard supports 2 devices, Premium supports up to 6.
Which Devices Support Downloads?
Downloads work on the Netflix mobile app for iOS and Android, and on tablets. Windows PCs don’t support downloads — Netflix removed offline downloads from its Windows app in a 2024 update, and there’s no official way to download to a Mac either. If you want offline Netflix on a laptop, your only real option is a supported mobile device.
How Many Times Can You Re-Download the Same Title?
A smaller number of titles carry a yearly download limit set by the studio that licenses the content to Netflix — typically somewhere in the range of 4 to 5 downloads per title, per year, though Netflix doesn’t display the exact number in advance. You’ll only find out you’re close when you see a warning, and get a hard stop once you hit it. If a title has been removed from Netflix entirely, it can’t be downloaded or renewed again regardless of how many times you’d used it previously.
Why Do Netflix Downloads Expire At All?
It comes down to licensing, not a technical limitation Netflix chose arbitrarily. Netflix doesn’t own most of what’s in its catalogue — it licenses it from studios and creators, and those licensing deals specify exactly how offline viewing is allowed to work, down to the number of days a download can sit unwatched and how many times a single account can download the same title in a year. That’s also why the rules aren’t consistent across titles: a Netflix Original with no external licensing constraints can have very different download rules to a licensed film from a major studio.
There’s a secondary reason too: expiring downloads nudges people to keep their subscription active rather than downloading a season’s worth of content and cancelling.
Do Netflix Downloads Delete Themselves?
Yes — once a download expires, you’ll see an orange exclamation mark and “Expired” next to the title. You can delete it manually, or simply let it sit; it won’t play until you reconnect and re-download it (assuming you’re still within your yearly limit for that title).
To delete a single download:
- Open the Netflix app and tap Downloads (on Windows, select Menu, then My Downloads).
- Tap Edit in the top corner.
- Select the title or episode you want to remove.
- Tap Delete or the red X.
To delete all downloads at once:
- Open the Netflix app and select More (…) or your Profile icon.
- Select App Settings.
- Under Downloads, select Delete All Downloads.
- Confirm.
Note: some devices use Smart Downloads, which automatically deletes an episode after you finish it and downloads the next one in the background — handy for binge-watching a series without manually managing storage.
How to Avoid Losing a Download You Actually Want to Watch
- Download shortly before you need it, not weeks in advance — if you’re downloading for a flight or a camping trip, do it the day before rather than the week before, so you’re not burning down the unwatched window before you’ve even left.
- Use Smart Downloads for shows — it automatically deletes an episode once you’ve finished it and queues up the next one, so you’re not manually managing storage or losing track of what’s about to expire.
- Check the Downloads page before a trip — anything expiring within 7 days shows a countdown, so a quick check before you lose signal tells you what to watch first.
